Donald Firesmith

Informal Biography

A geek by day, Donald Firesmith works at the famed Software Engineering Institute as a system and software engineer helping the US Government acquire large, complex software-intensive systems. In this guise, he has authored seven technical books, written numerous software- and system-related articles and papers, and spoken at more conferences than he can possibly remember. He’s also proud to have been named a Distinguished Engineer by the Association of Computing Machinery, although his pride is tempered somewhat by his fear that the term “distinguished” makes him sound like a graybeard academic rather than an active engineer whose beard is still somewhat more red than gray.

By night and on weekends, his alter ego writes fantasy novels and relaxes by handcrafting magic wands from various magical woods and mystical gemstones. His first foray into fiction is the book Magical Wands: A Cornucopia of Wand Lore written under the pen name Wolfrick Ignatius Feuerschmied. He is currently working on Hell Holes 3: To Hell and Back, the third book in his Hell Holes Series. He lives in Crafton, Pennsylvania with his wife Becky, and his youngest son Dane, and varying numbers of dogs, cats, and birds.

Major Reviews

Hell Holes 1: What Lurks Below

James Rollins watch out! (5 Stars)

“I couldn’t put this book down! I started it just after breakfast and finished it around eleven that same night! I loved the way Mr. Firesmith combined science and a bit of paranormal to tell his story. James Rollins watch out!”
Lori Beasley Bradley, Author of The Legend of the Swamp Witch and The Ruby Queen: Book 1 of The Soiled Dove Sagas

A Unique Action/Adventure Story (5 Stars)

Hell Holes: What Lurks Below is a quick, enjoyable read. Full of action and fraught with danger, the story moves at a steady pace throughout. Action scenes are well done, keeping you on the edge of your seat. The array of demons the author has created are well developed, scary, and unique. The demons (and the hell holes) provide an interesting and original premise. I won’t divulge any spoilers, but one character has very different and unexpected talents. If you enjoy action/adventure stories but are tired of the same old threats, this is a book you should pick up.”
Dave Robertson, Author of Strange Hunting, Strange Hunting II, and The Brave and The Dead

Urban Fantasy? Science Fantasy? (5 Stars)

“A big surprise. Even though the premise is spelled out during the Prologue, what followed was consistently surprising, and constantly gripping. Furthermore, the underlying science that is described here is very well presented. Not overly didactic, but adding an interesting and useful dimension which helps add credibility to the story as a whole.
The book is short, which is probably my only gripe. I got ‘into’ it quickly, and I enjoyed my time in Firesmith’s world. I did not want to leave. Given that there appears to be more to follow, I have something to look forward to and will certainly keep an eye out for a sequel.
Urban Fantasy? Science Fantasy? I’m not sure how to label it. But whatever it is, I really got a kick out of it, and would happily come back for more. Recommended.”
MJ Kobernus, Author of The Guardian: Blood in the Sand

Hell Holes 2: Demons on the Dalton

Another Winner in the Hell Holes Series (4 Stars)

Hell Holes: Demons on the Dalton is another action-packed battle/race with demons that were introduced in the first book. Like the first book, the story moves pretty steadily with liberal amounts of action and suspense. In this second installment, the US military gets involved and we’re put right into the middle of a war. There are some other new elements in book 2, but I won’t spoil it for those who have yet to read it. If you like action/adventure, this book will not disappoint you. I’m looking forward to book 3.”
Dave Robertson, Author of Strange Hunting, Strange Hunting II, and The Brave and The Dead
