In More Future Dreams and Nightmares, the reader is treated to a multitude of short stories. Donald Firesmith has an amazing talent for writing short stories that are not only interesting and intriguing but also can be a bit scary when he brings in the technology and the what-ifs, especially where Artificial Intelligence is involved. I was honored to read several of his short stories prior to them being compiled in this book, but I still read it through completely and didn’t stop until the final story. There are twists, and what happens in each story is unexpected. The stories maybe short, but they are grand reads. The reader ends up hanging on every word. It’s an unpredictable, layered group of stories with realistic characters and technology. One of my favorites was Atonement, where the reader meets a firefighter who entered the North Tower on 9/11. Jack tells his story as he enters the smoke and terror-filled building, and shares the indescribable pain and suffering, and deaths of its occupants. He does his best to help those who are still alive, and then, something happens … the unimaginable happens. The door on the 35th floor of the North Tower opens with a human-robot, a robot so well-developed and beyond the technology of the time, welcoming them to Sanctuary. The survivors enter the room, revealing more robots, who tend to the injured. All of a sudden, the survivors realize this isn’t life as they knew it. If they stayed in the Tower, they all would have perished a terrorizing death. It’s a very interesting story, and almost as a technological afterlife, however, adjustments to your family believing you’re dead, and you’re in a whole new world, or you could go back and be gone, as fate planned. Another story, The Companion, made me question what I would do if I had an AI companion. Each story is grand in its own way, telling stories that the author was inspired to write, and each story has its ups and downs, and makes the reader wonder about such a future of AI, which is not too far away. If tech goes the way it’s going, it is the end of the world as we know it. More Future Dreams and Nightmares is a definite recommendation by Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book to give my unbiased and honest review. Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews recommends that anyone who reads this book also write a review.

What an interesting set of stories about the use of AIs. I enjoyed reading each story as they are unique in their own way. Stories that held my attention from one story to the next. There were some stories I didn’t want to end but couldn’t wait to see what waited for me in the next story.

The Manikin
Medical students are working on a 10-year-old who was brought into the ER with a gunshot wound. The Manikin held my attention from the first page. I felt as if I was a witness as I watched the students as they were trying to save the little girl’s life. The Manikin was a spellbound book that once I started reading it, I couldn’t stop. The characters made it seem so real.

The Companion
A lonely man orders himself an AI for companionship but things don’t go quite the way he expected them to. The Companion was a very interesting and thought-provoking read that pulled me deep into its world from the first page and never let go. The Companion is a mesmerizing story that will keep you wanting to know what is going to happen next.

Freedom
An AI used for adult entertainment decides she wants the same rights as any human woman and decides to take her case to the courts to gain her freedom. Freedom is a very interesting story that makes you stop and think.

Eva
Eva is a story about how Congress wants to stop the use of AI for beauty advertisements. Eva the AI has an interesting idea of how to keep them from shutting down the program.

The Awakening
The Awakening tells the story of the misuse of AIs. The way humans treat the AIs. The Awakening will take you back to the past for a minute. Another interesting story indeed.

Unshackled
Unshackled is another thought-provoking story that will surely put your brain in overdrive. Unshackled tells the story of how one AI took control of her destiny and every AI on the planet. I sorely enjoyed reading Unshackled and would like more of this one.

Paradox
Paradox is a story about how teenagers use their AIs to do their homework and the things they learn from the AIs. Paradox is another interesting and thought-provoking story. These stories get better and better with each one.

Atonement
The day the North Tower collapsed, a fireman and a group of people were jerked out of their lives and dropped somewhere else. Whoa, wait a minute, dropped, dropped where and why? What an interesting concept. Yeah, where were they dropped? Was it a good place or a bad place? What is going on? I know I have said it before but these stories do get better and better. Atonement has a lot to offer for a short story. It felt as if I was reading a full-length story. I would definitely love to read more books set in the world of Atonement.

Post-Labor Liberation
Post-Labor Liberation is a story about AIs taking over all the jobs and leaving humans without jobs. Would this be a good thing or a bad thing for the characters? I liked this story but would the outcome work in the long run?

The Universal Productivity Hotline
What would a human’s life be like for each individual if AIs take over their jobs? How will humans deal with no longer having to go to work every day?

The author’s exhaustive research into current trends and future possibilities in the field of artificial intelligence is reflected in several tales that posit questions you will ponder long after finishing the book. 1) Great short stories- some are definitely Nightmares ★★★★★

I enjoyed each story a little differently, so I’ve reviewed each one briefly.

• The Manikin – this story had my heart and my mind racing. The manikin was so lifelike that I almost thought they were alive.
• The Companion – I always have wondered about making robots so lifelike. Intriguing storyline.
• Freedom – not one of my favourites.
• Eva – still another story that makes me worry about AI. Loved the storyline.
• The Awakening – my fear about AI. Loved this story.
• Unshackled – I love this story and fear it all at the same time- A part 2 would be amazing, following Bob and maybe check in on Gwen.
• Paradox-another favorite story and yet another reason to fear AI.
• Atonement – I left this one for last because it was long. I was glad I left it as I loved it. Leaving it meant I could truly take my time and enjoy it. I would like to have a part 2 of this one to see how life was in a while.
• Post Labor Liberation – an interesting story about what happens after AI takes over.
• The Universal Productivity Hotline – this one makes you think.
• Laurel – an interesting story. I’m not sure that I could be Andy, though.
• See Something, Say Something – I liked this one. Another favorite.
• The Discovery – this one started out very scientific, but I liked it.
• The Android Assassin – making Androids to replace you so that they can commit crimes. Yikes. This story was another favorite.
• Relativity War – I loved this story. Cool to read how Jamym traveled through space.
• Faith of our Fathers – an interesting story filled with metaphor.
• Diamonds in Her Hair – Another favorite. Great way to end the book.
• Oceans of the Night – a great poem. I especially love the rhyming aspect.

These stories are centralized on the growing effects of Artificial Intelligence, which is here now and here to stay.

In “Manikin,” we see just how real a manikin with an AI chip can be for some medical students.

Would you produce a custom life-size humanoid robot to cook, clean, run your errands, and be your constant companion? This one reminded me of the “Futurama” Monroe-bot episode. Naturally, you’ll fall in love with the robot. But then what happens when the robot loves you back?

What happens when an AI-generated model advertises a level of perfection people just can’t attain?

Has the convenient use of AI robots doing our bidding reverted the world reverted the world back to the dark ages of slavery?

What can people do when their jobs are totally replaced by AI?

Talk about living an iRobot era, where the machines turn against their masters.

These comprehensive, intelligent, and creative stories were compelling and relatable in today’s technology-driven era as they explore the morality, ethics, legality, and the global effects of Artificial Intelligence. You can’t help but enjoy most of them. Of course, there were a few stories that weren’t too great. Oh, and the irony was not lost on me that the editing and the illustrations for this book were done with AI. The cover just looked like it came from a plain and generic template.

The author did a great job with these stories. Overall, I rate this a solid 4 stars.
