16) Wings, Wonder, Whimsy ★★★★★
By The Book Reviewer on 2 April 2025 (Amazon AU Review)
What if the world was still full of magic, and all we had to do was notice it? The Adventures of Periwinkle Fae invites us into a realm where nature hums with secrets, tiny miracles flutter just beyond sight, and curiosity is the key to unlocking adventure. This book does something quietly radical — it insists that wonder still exists, and it makes you believe it.
Periwinkle, our charming and mischievous protagonist, is more than just a fairy — she’s an explorer, a problem-solver, and a champion of the natural world. As she navigates the delicate balance between the magical and the mundane, her journey mirrors the way children — and, let’s be honest, adults too — see the world: full of the unexpected, the delightful, and the slightly mysterious. Who among us hasn’t wished, at least once, that the rustling in the trees was something more than the wind?
Science tells us that storytelling activates more regions of the brain than simple information processing does. When we read about Periwinkle’s escapades, our neurons don’t just register words — they light up as if we are experiencing the adventures ourselves. This book, in its clever and subtle way, makes you feel part of its world.
Beyond the charm, there’s substance. The book weaves in themes of environmental stewardship, friendship, and perseverance. It doesn’t preach but instead nudges readers toward an appreciation of the interconnectedness of all things.
One of the book’s greatest strengths is its ability to be read on multiple levels. Younger readers will delight in Periwinkle’s antics, while older ones will find themselves reflecting on the deeper messages tucked between the lines. That’s the mark of a story with staying power — it grows with you.
If you’ve ever stared at the sky and found shapes in the clouds, if you’ve ever left a tiny piece of cake on the windowsill just in case, or if you’ve ever caught yourself smiling at fireflies on a summer evening, then this book is for you. It’s a reminder that magic might not be gone — it might just be waiting for us to pay attention.
I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars. The only reason it doesn’t earn a perfect score is that it’s AI-assisted in both visuals and writing, which may not resonate with all readers and could raise ethical considerations. However, the storytelling and artistry remain engaging and well-crafted.

What Can a Pixie Teach Us About the Universe?
In 1990, astronaut Carl Sagan requested that Voyager 1 turn its camera back toward Earth, capturing the now-famous Pale Blue Dot—a tiny speck in the vast cosmos. In that moment, humanity was reminded of its smallness in the grand scheme of things. But does being small mean being insignificant?
Donald Firesmith’s The Adventures of Periwinkle Fae answers this question through the enchanting tales of Periwinkle, a tiny pixie with an immeasurable heart. Like the fireflies she befriends, Periwinkle’s glow isn’t about size—it’s about presence. In a world where loudness is often mistaken for importance, this collection of bedtime stories reminds us that even the smallest beings can change their world.
The Universe of the Enchanted Forest
Set in a magical woodland untouched by humans, this book follows Periwinkle as she navigates a world of moonlit mysteries, lost fireflies, dancing lizards, and wayward raindrops. The Enchanted Forest operates on its own quiet logic, much like the ecosystems of our own world, where every creature—from the tiniest ant to the towering oak—plays a role in maintaining balance. In many ways, Periwinkle’s world mirrors our own, only sprinkled with pixie dust.
The stories are carefully crafted, each with its own rhythm, much like Aesop’s fables or the ancient folktales passed down for generations. They teach not through grand lectures but through experience—through Periwinkle’s failures, kindness, and discoveries. Whether helping a butterfly find confidence after an injury or teaching a hesitant lizard to dance, Periwinkle’s adventures reflect the very essence of learning: trial, error, and courage.
Why Children (and Adults) Need This Book
Modern education places heavy emphasis on STEM subjects, yet studies show that imaginative storytelling plays a crucial role in cognitive and emotional development. According to a study by the American Academy of Pediatrics, storytelling enhances empathy, problem-solving, and linguistic skills in young readers. This book does just that—teaching emotional intelligence without making it feel like a lesson.
The language is accessible, and the stories are structured to engage young readers without overwhelming them. While some moments may feel a bit too mature for a bedtime story, the overall tone is gentle, making it ideal for shared reading between parents and children. There are no villains, no high-stakes battles—just the quiet magic of everyday moments, something today’s fast-paced entertainment often overlooks.
Who Will Love It, Who Might Not?
This book is a treasure for young readers who love fantasy, nature, and whimsical adventures. If you’ve ever been enchanted by The Wind in the Willows or Winnie-the-Pooh, Periwinkle’s world will feel like home. However, those seeking fast-paced action or complex conflicts may find it too soft-spoken.
Illustrations, though charming, are AI-generated, which may deter readers who prefer traditional, hand-drawn art. Additionally, while the book is wonderfully written, parents and educators should note that dialogue sometimes skews more advanced than typical early-reader language.
Final Thoughts
The Adventures of Periwinkle Fae is more than a bedtime story collection—it’s a gentle reminder that kindness, curiosity, and small acts of courage create ripples, even in the quietest corners of the world. Like a firefly blinking in the darkness, its magic is subtle but undeniable.

2) 26 Magical Bedtime Stories for Children You Will Read Again and Again! ★★★★★
By Margaret on 17 March 2025 (Amazon US ReviewGoodreads Review)
Amazon Review:
Each of the 26 Magical Bedtime Stories is a gem you will be reading. The illustrations are wonderful as well. But, the best part is that each of the 26 stories teaches a lesson every child will understand, and you will appreciate reading to your children. I always thoroughly enjoy Donald Firesmith’s books and stories, in various genres, but this is his first foray into writing for children. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but found this lovely book to be thoroughly enchanting. Don’t skip reading the back notes at the end of the book, which tell so much about how this book was written. Truly interesting! The author also includes a description of each of the 26 stories you will find helpful, so you will know what each story is about before reading to your children or grandchildren!
Goodreads Review:
Amazing!
This is perfect for children. It makes you feel like you are there watching and being part of the adventure. Wow!
It holds your attention throughout the adventures of these fantastic characters. You really don’t want to stop reading. Give us more, please.

By Ann Daniel on 12 March 2025 (Amazon UK Review and Goodreads Review)
I was honoured to proofread this for Donald, and as always, he didn’t disappoint. I smiled all the way through this, it’s such an adorable book of children’s short stories about a fairy called Periwinkle and all her animal friends. It’s obviously very different from all the other books I’ve read by him, but different in a great way. I loved every minute of reading it and couldn’t stop smiling while I was following Periwinkle and her friends on their adventures. I highly recommend you get this for your little ones, or if you are like me, an adult who loves kids’ books, you have to read this as it’s so much fun 😃

16) Firesmith’s eye-opening description of how Claude AI and he work together ★★★★☆
By June Gillam on 9 June 2025 (Amazon US Review)
This is a terrific book in many ways. The stories are engaging with important messages, almost like extended fables from the old days. However, the part I appreciate most is Firebird’s [sic] extended description of his collaboration with Claude Sonnet AI. Initially, I was troubled because I wanted to give this book to my 4-year-old granddaughter but her father hates AI generated publications and will not even read works published after 2010 because he suspects them of being written by AI.
So, I ran these concerns by Claude AI and he responded: “Authors who are transparent about their AI collaboration often discuss things like:
• How they maintained creative control and vision
• The extent of human editing and refinement
• Their role in developing characters, themes, and narrative structure
• Why they chose to work with AI as a tool
Since Firesmith appears to have a technical background, he might offer particularly thoughtful insights into the collaborative process that could be educational rather than concerning.”
With all this in mind now, instead of giving the book to my granddaughter, I will give it to her father for Father’s Day with a suggestion that I’d love for him to read about this author’s collaborative creative process before he decides if the book is appropriate for his daughter.
In my view, not only is The Adventures of Periwinkle Fae packed with engaging fairy stories, but it is also an example of a transparent and intentional way to use AI ethically as an author, a topic I find fascinating. The stories themselves are a tiny bit formulaic, however, causing my four instead of five star rating.

10) Wishing Shelf’s Editorial Review ★★★★☆
By Billy Button on 15 April 2025 (Goodreads Review)
‘A delightful set of shorts; fun, whimsical, a perfect bedtime read for young children.’
I’m a big Enid Blyton fan. So, this magical, wonderfully innocent book was right up my street. The authors, Claude Sonnet, Donald Firesmith, did a wonderful job, offering young readers (I’d say, 8 – 10 year olds; younger if an adult is reading it to them) an array of fantastical characters along with the brave, smart Periwinkle who is (very much) up for adventure.
I suspect, at present, there’s a big demand for books like this. I think many parents, grandparents want ‘innocent’ – particularly when the world seems to be going a little bit to pot. This is the sort of book that precedes the gritty YA novel; still offering adventure, thrills and spills, and suspense, but without the darkness, without the ‘end of world’ antagonist.
So, all you parents, grandparents, and schools out there looking for an enchanting bedtime read and, just like Enid Blyton’s books, also offering a strong moral theme – helping others, being kind – then this book is for you. Personally, I just love an Enchanted Forest, particularly if there’s a Butterfly Ball to go to.
Delightful!

There’s something gentle and touching about how every lesson is tucked between the lines. The adventures, while small, carried the biggest messages about courage and kindness. This has been added to my list of favorite nighttime reads. It’s not just a book. This has been added to my list of favorite nighttime reads. 1) Cute Stories for Young Children ★★★★☆
By Christie on 19 March 2025 (Amazon CA Review and Goodreads Review)
While I liked each story, I could only read a few at a time, as I found that they all had very similar storylines. They were very easy to read stories with cute characters, especially Periwinkle. In each story, she helps different forest characters who are feeling a little lost or sad. Each story has a cute moral.

1) Stephen Saxton’s Review ★★★☆☆
By Stephen Saxton on 10 March 2025 (Goodreads Review)
The book wasn’t what I was expecting from Donald. Glad he had the opportunity to test out the AI. As noticed in his synopsis, he had to do several revisions to get it to where he wanted it to be.
This book might be good for beginning readers. The concepts are what I grew up on, but not sure if they hold truth in today’s world.
Personally, if I had looked closer to what the book was about (I was thinking, oh good, a “free” book to read); I probably wouldn’t have acquired it. It was not in the normal genre that I read. I have no children in the house, and don’t expect any in the future.
